Supported Education Principles

The definition of Supported Education is:

Helping people with mental illness participate in an education program so they may receive the education and training they need to achieve their learning and recovery goals and become gainfully employed in the job or career of their choice.

The principles of Supported Education include:

  • Eligibility is based on client choice
  • Services are community-based
  • Supported Education is integrated with mental health treatment
  • Supported Education starts soon after person expresses interest
  • Individualized follow-along supports are ongoing
  • Individual preferences guide services
  • Supported Education is strengths focused  and promotes hope, and recovery
